 I am reading a lot about how Smart Motorways are death traps. They are the ones where the hard shoulder has been turned into a fourth lane, to ease congestion at busy times. If a vehicle breaks down the place to stop is the painted area for emergencies. Depending on the nature of the breakdown it may not always be possible to get to one of these refuges. 

The hard shoulder is often thought of a safe place to stop. It is not safe. If you have no alternative and your vehicle is losing power, get yourself over to the left hand lane. On a Smart Motorway, try and pull into an emergency refuge. 

Wherever your vehicle comes to a halt, whether refuge or hard shoulder, get out of it as soon as you can. Get behind a crash barrier if there is one. Stand well back from the vehicle, up a grassy bank if you can. In built up areas it may not be easy, but put distance between yourself and your vehicle. Do not sit in it, even if raining.
